Caprineye

The Curious One

Somewhat resembling a large sheep or goat, with long opposable ears, Caprineye wanders the fields and meadows of the east. Guided by a boundless curiosity and love of friendship, some call this Monster “Ald-Amura’s Wanderer,” and despite its lack of flashy powers, he is a symbol for travelers everywhere.

The Power

A naturalist style sketch image depicting a small goat-like Monster with a large single eye in the center of its head, two curved horns that point directly up, and long ears that end in prehensile fingers. The Monster is visibly slightly wounded, with a bandage on its ankle. On its back is a large blanket.

Curiously for a Monster, Caprineye lacks anything one might consider a power. They cannot shift the ground under their feet, call upon magical reserves of hidden knowledge, speak into being new realities, or command the storms. He is said to know the true names of all things, but seeing as Caprineye speaks only in calming bleats and gruffs, the truth of this is difficult to know.

Certainly the Curious One happens upon good fortune and company wherever he goes.

People

Perhaps the most relatable Monster in the whole world, everyone in the land imagines what it would be like to receive a visit from Caprineye. Stories are told of chance meetings on the road with the strange little Monster, and countless Confederations use his image in their artwork. His small, unassuming statue, his curious hands, and his unwavering love of exploring every nook and cranny of Ald-Amura represents to many the perfect life.

Despite this universal love, and his generally warm and friendly nature, Caprineye only ever bonds with a single human at a time, taking a new travelling partner every hundred years or so. These blessed travelers are considered folk heroes, and there is no end to the rumors of the secret places Caprineye shows them. To “Take Caprineye’s Hand” is an idiom in Ald-Amura, meaning to take on a great venture with a trusted comrade.

Epic Destiny

Caprineye seems so content and comfortable in the world as they are, it’s hard to imagine him working toward a goal—indeed many consider Caprineye a solid example of a Monster without a destiny. Others disagree, and suggest that Caprineye is searching for something, or someone, in his wanderings.

  2. Caprineye’s cries echo through the valleys—Every valley, in every corner of the world.
  3. Filled with rage, the Caprineye’s horns grow enormously, and their fur sharpens like knives.
  4. Caprineye’s eye glows and flashes rapidly, changing colors, hypnotizing any who see the light.
  5. The dexterous hands on the end of Caprineye’s ears become mischievous, stealing objects and breaking valuables.
  6. Caprineye splits into a thousand tiny versions of itself, each as curious and wanderlust-struck as the original.
