Travel Events

When traveling between locations, your group may enjoy some fun side quests or momentary diversions. Just take a look through this collection and pick something that seems fun, or use it like a roll table and roll a die to determine what happens. We recommend using one or two of these per journey—whatever suits your game’s vibe.

All Along the Watchtower

by Jamie O’Duibhir

A woman stands beside a large pack of building materials, clearly in a little distress. Below the cliff you stand on, a large plain stretches out in the distance, the sun setting slowly on the horizon. The woman sees you approach and perks up at seeing your Monster Care Squad uniforms. She needs help building the watchtower she commissioned to observe the migration of a rare animal across the plain below.

They Were Just Here

by Adrian Thoen

You meet a local with an unusual reputation for their strange musical talents calling for their lost pet, Foustious. They assure you he is a friendly, small little thing. It is a Gurcorn, something like a fluffy Rhino. There is a clear trail of destruction leading into a nearby swamp.

Bunny Day

by Quinn Welsh-Wilson

At a crossroads, a large but orderly crowd has formed. At the center of the crowd sits a rabbit with the eyes and swiveling head of an owl atop an ornately crafted box. As each person from the crowd steps forward, the rabbit places her forepaws on the person’s face, regards their eyes, and whispers into their ear. Those gathered here are eager to tell newcomers that today and today only the rabbit is counseling onlookers with her visions of the future. The rabbit will tell each and every person she meets something that someone at some point in their future will need to hear before wishing them a lifetime of connectedness with those around them.

The Vanished Village

by T.H. Ravencroft

There is a spot on the map where there should be a village. When the party arrives, there is no village and no trace of a village. There is no hint there ever was a village. Tracks from the local Monster—notes on the map say its name is Hacidae, with a sketch of an exceptionally large and rather frightening bird—circle the area. It was obviously looking for the village and its people before disappearing off to the West.

Light as a Stone

by Xavid

At the edge of a lush forest, you encounter a traveling peddler who is only too happy to show off her wares: stone sculptures, mostly figurines of birds and other winged creatures, that float in the air, tethered by colorful woven cords. She explains that they are carved from a rare, naturally-buoyant stone mined in a town by the coast. As you talk, a young child whose parent has bought them a fairy-like figurine lets go of the cord, and it begins to float high in the air, quickly as high as the treetops. The child, reaching after it in vain, bursts into tears.

The Constellation Express

by Will Uhl

Plumes of prismatic steam billow and bluster in the distance. When the party approaches, they find the Constellation Express: a magic flying train famous for its lavish service. It made an emergency landing after running low on fuel, and now its colorfully eccentric passengers have stepped out to take in their surroundings. Tempting scents waft from the dining car, and the sounds of orchestral rehearsal spill from the one-of-a-kind ballroom car.

The train’s lead engineer approaches the party to ask for help. The train’s engine is fueled by dreams—the more vivid/recurring, the better. Alternatively, the freight car is loaded with heavy cargo—if they can take some to the next city, it may lighten the train enough to move.

The Crystal Mystery

by Auden James

At a bend in the road your party spots a strange gleam on top of a large boulder. Climbing up, you see a pile of rough, spherical stones in hues of dull green and blue. There is sparkling dust around the pile. If you choose, each member of your party may open one stone to reveal a differently-colored crystal prism. You will have to discover the properties of each crystal for yourselves. Beware though–if anyone becomes greedy and takes more than one crystal stone, they will unleash a terrible curse.

Faces In The Crowd

by Liam Ginty

As you cross a wide stone bridge over a small river, a large crowd of robe-clad people shuffle past you. They seem to multiply, and no matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to make any progress making your way through them. After a few minutes of shuffling and excuse-mes, you notice every member of the crowd is wearing an ornate, lifelike mask. You recognize one of the faces, then another.

Hunter’s Rest

by Liam Ginty

A small stone path beckons you from the main road and leads you to a small grove. All sound seems muted here, and there are ancient weapons strewn about the place, long since overgrown with iridescent flowers. An immense epitaph for the last hunters stands in the center

The Door Fog

by Liam Ginty

A thick soupy mist rolls through the area, and as it passes, it leaves behind hundreds of doors. Each opens to a different time, a past or future that may never have been.

Stairway

by Liam Ginty

An enormous spiral staircase sits in the road. It stretches so high above you you can barely see the peak through the parting clouds.

The Soulful Fjord

by Nychelle Schneider

You find yourself in a land filled with bioluminescent lilies clinging to jutted rock faces and spotted with snow. If one listens and is mindful, you can hear the soft melodious voices of the souls long gone telling their stories to those willing to listen. Few beasts roam here, and those that do are guardians of the dead. Some say that if you speak softly while steeping the petals of a lily that sang to you, it grants you visions of the one it was before. Others say only a chosen few ever see the golden lily and those it speaks to, can be granted a wish.

Another Sky

by Alexander Guerrero-Randall

A large, juddering stone machine is visible off the path. As the party approaches, they find it is somehow generating a “hole” in the ground, through which can be seen a sky of an unfamiliar color. Could this be another world, or another time? An immense, feathered-serpent type Monster glides below the hole, looking up with serenity and curiosity in its eyes. The stone machine makes a series of loud CLUNK noises, and the edges of the hole waver, then solidify. Nearby are several personal hang-gliding harnesses, with a note pinned to the first reading “Take One!”
